Neeraj Chopra Secures 2nd Place at Lausanne Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra, India’s star javelin thrower, delivered a stellar performance at the Lausanne Diamond League, securing second place with a season-best throw of 89.49 meters. The 26-year-old athlete saved his best for the last, with his final attempt surpassing his earlier performance at the Paris Olympics.

Despite a slow start, Chopra’s determination shone through. He was initially in fourth position but managed to move up with an 85.58m throw in his fifth attempt. His last throw of 89.49m not only earned him the second spot but also demonstrated his fighting spirit, pushing him to the top of his game.

A Strong Comeback Despite Challenges

Chopra’s journey to the second spot wasn’t easy. He faced the risk of missing his final throw but secured his place in the top three with his fifth-round effort. Only the top three athletes after five rounds are given a final attempt in the Diamond League format.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters, a two-time world champion and Paris Olympics bronze medallist, won the event with an impressive second-round throw of 90.61 meters. Germany’s Julian Weber secured third place with an 87.08m throw.

Reflecting on his performance, Chopra said, “The feeling wasn’t great at first, but I’m happy with my throw, especially the second-best throw of my career on my last attempt. It was a tough start, but the comeback was really nice, and I enjoyed the fighting spirit I showed.” Despite nursing a long-standing groin injury, Chopra has consistently proven his resilience, even finishing strong when the odds were against him.

Eyeing the Diamond League Finals

Neeraj Chopra has continued to compete at the highest level despite injury concerns. He claimed a silver medal at the Paris Olympics on August 8, 2024, with an 89.45m throw, following his historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. However, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem beat him to gold in Paris with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m.

In Lausanne, Anderson Peters led the competition from the beginning, showcasing his class with a 90m-plus throw in the final round. Peters, who has a personal best of 93.07m, has regained his form after struggling last year and currently tops the Diamond League standings with 21 points.

Chopra, with seven points from his second-place finish in Lausanne, is now joint third with Julian Weber, both standing at 15 points. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, who finished seventh with a throw of 82.03 meters, holds second place with 16 points.

Road to the Diamond League Finals

Neeraj Chopra was the Diamond League champion in 2022 and narrowly missed out on the title in the 2023 final, finishing second to Jakub Vadlejch in Eugene, USA. This year’s finals will be held in Brussels on September 14, and Chopra needs to secure a top-six finish in the Diamond League standings to qualify for the season finale.

Before the finals, Chopra has another opportunity to compete at the Zurich Diamond League on September 5, which also features a men’s javelin throw event. Although Chopra won the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League in 2022 and 2023, he has yet to claim a victory in this year’s series, finishing second in Doha on May 10 and again in Lausanne.

Despite managing his groin injury since winning gold at the Budapest World Championships last year, Chopra continues to push forward, embodying the spirit of perseverance. His focus now shifts to the remaining Diamond League events and securing his spot in the Brussels final.
